Prior-to the hotel’s opening in 2007, when the management team were deciding on a name for the new hotel, an obvious choice incorporated its picturesque location on Chocolate Lake, Halifax.
The idea of having an in-house dog at the hotel was discussed, potentially a Border Collie or Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever, when a call was received from a local veterinary clinic, whom had a friendly young Chocolate Labrador puppy in need of a home. She was estimated to be about 9 months old at the time.
In the weeks leading-up to opening day, it was decided that they would initially do a trial-run at the hotel. The new puppy, by then nicknamed “Cocoa,” to reflect the new name of the hotel, would spend 2 days-a-week at the hotel, greeting construction crews and the new staff. Her nights were spent among other doggie friends and a human named Mike. On October 16th, 2007, she spent her first overnight at the hotel and before long, Cocoa began staying at the hotel full-time.
The cute Chocolate Lab puppy who had come to us was now Cocoa, our official greeter and hotel ambassador. During her first season with us, she completed dog obedience training and became proficient at welcoming all of our guests.
She has since become our mascot, valued team member, and an important part of the Chocolate Lake Hotel family. But have you heard? Cocoa’s retired! After spending almost 10 years with us at the Chocolate Lake Hotel, Cocoa has retired from being our Welcome Ambassador and has decided to spend her days lazing around home, soaking up the sun, and taking long beach walks with her family.
